I suspect the digital world considers us to be on call, to use mundane terms. Possibly because it's simpler than recruiting and assigning partners to a completely new group of "Chosen" every time a threat arises...or perhaps to make it in our personal best interests to ensure dangers are dealt with quickly and effectively.
