[Neku is 10 and not quite so spiky yet: both literally and personality-wise. To the point that when he sees a crying little kid his first thought isn't to facepalm in annoyance yet.

He approaches, Terriermon napping on his head]

...you okay?

[ A little messy haired five year old Squall looks up at Neku and scoots back a little. Matron always told him talking to strangers could be dangerous so he had to be careful. ]

Y-yes...?

[ he quickly rubs at his eyes furiously and stares at Neku more. ]

Nu-uh. Okay people don't cry.

[He puffs out his chest a little, like he just imparted some great wisdom upon Squall. He is a big kid after all: Squall is practically a baby and might still think you can just cry whenever.]

[innermonologues]

[ he sniffles more and rubs at his eyes more. ]

N-No... Im suppose to be strong.

You're too little for that. But I won't tell.

But sis won't come back until I become stwonger...

Okay then, first you gotta stop crying. Guys aren't supposed to cry!

[ Squall slowly got up off the ground and wanders over to Neku with his hand stretched out. ]
